Don’t Talk To Me About the Oscars

I’m done with the Oscars. They’ve always had the reputation of being political, but it was still meaningful to be an Oscar-winning movie, or even just nominated. That perception is now completely gone for me. I’m at the point where I wish even the people who mocked the Oscars wouldn’t bring it up. Ignore it. Don’t even give them that much attention.

There is some discussion to be had about why the Oscars’ viewership is down so much since 2014. Is it because society is done with them like I am, or is it just the entertainment landscape as a whole? There are more options than ever. Hollywood is no longer the only show in town. All I can say is I know I’m not alone.

I feel sorry for actors like Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan when I say this. If only everyone on that stage was like them. They were so genuinely grateful and happy for each other when they both won. I couldn’t help but be happy for them. Robin Williams is another great example of someone who got up on stage to accept his reward with gratitude and joy.

In the end, regardless of the overall reasons for viewership decline, the Academy has failed actors like them by letting their awards show devolve into its current state. No one has to watch this garbage, any more than anyone has to read my books or consume any other form of entertainment. In a world with lots of competition, your only hope is to be entertaining.
