What I’m Doing Between Novels

Since I finished my novel, what am I doing? I’m not going to revise that story right away. I want to let it sit for a while. Months, perhaps even a year. That way, when I do finally pick it up again, I’m going in with fresh eyes. Also, I’ll hopefully have written another novel or two in the intervening time and gained more experience.

I’m purposefully not writing right now. I had an app idea for the iPhone that I’m putting together. I want to get that mostly up and running before I pick up the next story and start writing prose. Developing an app and writing a novel at the same time, both as side projects, is a bit much. That said, I think I’ll start the outlining process soon.

I’m also reading Structuring Your Novel by KM Weiland. It’s not the first book I’ve read on story structure, but it’s nice to have multiple perspectives. I found her take on the inciting incident to be particularly helpful.
